computertyping.gif (11098 bytes)     Veterinary Technology education has hit the Internet in this age of technology.  St. Petersburg College offers students across the United States a unique opportunity to earn an Associate in Science degree* in Veterinary Technology through its Distance Education program.  It is designed especially for veterinary hospital employees who are unable to relocate or give up daytime jobs.

    The difference between on-site and distance learning is in the method of interaction with students, not the content or the desired outcome.  Credits earned by distance education are the same as those earned on campus.  Students may mix distance education courses with on-site courses to better accommodate work and family obligations.

    *An Associate in Science (A.S.) degree is ideal for students who wish to prepare for a career that requires training beyond high school, though not a four-year institutions, although the general education credits transfer and some of the courses in the major may be used for electives.

    How it works

    Online students take general education courses at a local community college or university, or may transfer education courses from previous college work.   The Veterinary Technology courses are conducted in the evening via a computer network, while laboratory courses are completed in animal hospitals or clinics under the supervision of veterinarians and graduate technicians.

    Special requirements

    Lecture final exams are proctored by a local community college.   Because the online class meetings are in the evenings, it is best for students to have a computer at home.  A Macintosh or a PC with Windows is recommended.

    Selected admission

    Preference in the selective admission process is given to students who:

bullethave completed a substantial portion of their required general education courses with a high grade point average;
bulletare currently employed by a veterinarian who is an AVMA member, and
bulletare computer literate with experience in keyboarding and word processing.

Applications are evaluated on a first-come, first-served basis.

    Special features of the program

    Through SPC's Veterinary Technician distance program, you can:

bulletearn a degree while being employed full time or part time;
bulletget credit for the knowledge and skills you already have;
bulletavoid the time and expense of moving or long commutes to class;
bullettake a course load that fits your needs; and
bulletreceive financial assistance, if your qualified.

    Tradition of excellence

    St. Petersburg College became the state's first two year institution of higher learning in 1927.  With quality education as its founding hallmark, SPC has grown in stature and today is recognized internationally as one of America's best.

    Accreditation

    In addition to the college's regional accreditation, the Veterinary Technology Distance Education Program is accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association (1931 N. Meacham Rd., Suite 100, Schaumburg, IL 60173-4360; 800-248-2862).   AVMA accreditation makes graduates eligible to sit for examinations in any state that offers licensure, certification or registration.
